Google has unveiled a new experimental feature in Search Labs called “Ask for Me.” This AI-driven tool enables users to request Google to contact businesses on their behalf to gather information about service pricing and availability. Currently, this feature is being tested for services such as car maintenance and beauty treatments.
How It Works
To try “Ask for Me,” users must first opt into the experiment through Search Labs. After joining, when they search for service-related queries like “car service near me,” Google may display an “Ask for Me” prompt. If selected, Google AI will place a call to the business, inquire about pricing and availability, and relay the details back to the user.
Official Announcement
Rose Yao, Google’s Vice President of Search Product, announced the launch via social media, highlighting its practical benefits:
“We’re introducing a new AI experiment in Search Labs that helps you connect with local businesses. Whether you need an urgent oil change or a nail appointment, Google AI can make the call for you. Currently, we’re testing this with auto repair shops and salons. Since this is an experiment, availability is limited, and some users may encounter a waitlist.”
She also clarified that “Ask for Me” operates using Duplex, Google’s AI-powered system that previously facilitated restaurant reservations and helped businesses keep their Google Maps listings updated.
The Technology Behind It
Google Duplex, first introduced in 2018, allows AI to interact with businesses that lack online booking systems. This technology mimics natural human speech, making automated calls sound more conversational and seamless. In addition to booking appointments, Duplex has been used to ensure business information—such as operating hours—remains current, particularly during periods of rapid change, like the COVID-19 pandemic.
Business Participation
Google assures that businesses retain control over their participation in this feature. They can choose to opt out at any time, and calls made using “Ask for Me” are clearly disclosed to recipients.
As testing continues, Google encourages users to provide feedback on how well the tool helps them streamline interactions with service providers. If successful, “Ask for Me” could expand to a broader range of businesses and services in the future.
