Google has announced that its search algorithms assess whether certain sections of a website are significantly distinct from the site’s primary content. This approach aims to highlight the most relevant information across various sites.
A representative from Google shared insights with Glenn Gabe, an independent SEO consultant, confirming that their ranking systems are designed to identify content that diverges from the main theme of a website. This has led to noticeable declines in search visibility for specific segments of larger sites in recent weeks, a trend documented by Gabe.
Understanding Google’s Approach
Google emphasized that their systems focus on determining if parts of a website are either independent or markedly different from its main content. This methodology is intended to enhance the relevance of search results.
The company referenced a statement from 2019 made on X (formerly Twitter), which clarified their position on hosting third-party content within subdomains or subfolders. While this practice is permissible, Google has enhanced its systems to better identify when such content is truly independent from the primary site, advising website owners to exercise caution and maintain oversight.
Recent Developments
Gabe highlighted several sites, including Fortune Recommends, Forbes Advisor, APNews Buyline, and others, that have experienced significant drops in visibility for certain sections. Initially, he speculated that Google might be experimenting with its site reputation algorithms. However, Google clarified that their site reputation abuse policies are not currently active and are enforced manually instead.
