Google Updates Search Algorithm to Combat Explicit Deepfakes

Google has rolled out a new search algorithm update designed to tackle non-consensual explicit content, particularly focusing on artificially generated images and videos known as “deepfakes.”

Additionally, a new scanning mechanism has been introduced to detect and eliminate duplicate images once the original has been removed from the search results.

Changes to Ranking Systems

The search algorithm has been modified to potentially lower the visibility of explicit deepfake content in various search queries.

For searches involving explicit content and specific names, the system will now attempt to prioritize non-explicit results, such as news articles.

Adjustments to Site Rankings

Websites hosting numerous pages with removed explicit fake content may experience changes in their overall search rankings.

Google has reported a significant reduction in the appearance of explicit image results for certain queries.

The company has observed a decrease of over 70% in targeted search results.

The issue of explicit deepfake content is not confined to search engines alone. Google has indicated plans to collaborate with industry partners and experts to tackle this problem on a broader scale.

Emma Higham, Product Manager at Google, remarked on the update, saying:

“These changes mark a significant enhancement to our protections within Search, but we recognize there’s more to be done. We are committed to developing new solutions to support individuals affected by this content.”
